It was my last night in Ikaria, and I wanted to go for one last swim. I had been spending 2 hours a day in the clear cool waters body surfing when waves got big, and snorkeling and jumping off rocks with some local kids when the sea was calm. I swam out to where I could see the sunset, and after a while, swam back to shore. I brought my mask and snorkel to the beach that night just in case I felt like looking around. There was no direct sunlight, but the water was very calm and clear, I was already cold and wet, and I thought a few more minutes poking around would be fun.
I wasn't more than 30 feet off shore, in chest deep water, when I spotted something that wasn't a fish, crab, or urchin. Though most of it was underneath a rock, what was exposed was unmistakeable. It was an Octopus. It looked just like it does in a restaurant, except this was all in one piece. I backed away and circled around so I could see it from all angles. It was a purplish-reddish pink, and it's head was about the size of my two hands clasped together. It's tentacles were mostly under rock, but I assumed they would be about 10-12 inches in length and they were as thick as a roll of quarters. I was very curious to see the whole thing, it hadn't moved yet, so I guess it was up to me to make it move. "What would happen" I wondered, "if I approached?"

All right - I'll bite - what happened next? You clearly weren't drowned by an octopus the size of a breadbox, but I can only imagine something exciting happened. Great stuff so far, Boz.
